Newsweek that it was "not the truth that [Trump] was under 'continuous audit,'" while adding that the former president's claim that the supposed audits were preventing the release of the records was also not true."The pendency of an audit has nothing to do with whether returns can be released at all," Eisen said. "There is no legal or other reason to hold back a tax return because of an audit. It is apples and oranges — a made up justification. And now we know that even on its own terms, it did not make sense."
